Parent Mentor Program

Parents United in Action/Padres Unidos en Accion is a Parent Mentor Program designed to increase parental involvement in the East Aurora District 131 elementary schools, and raise the self esteem and confidence of participating parents.

Parents commit to spending 10 hours/week at the school. They are assigned to a specific classroom and spend 2 hours/day working in that class to assist the teacher and focus on helping struggling students. Twice/month, the parents meet as a group to process their experience, gain training and skills to be better Mentors and parents, and to support each other. At the end of each semester that they participate in the program, parents are given a small stipend: $400 for the 1st semester and $600 for the 2nd semester.

Community 4:12 administers and provides the primary funds for the program.  We began the program in 2006 at Brady Elementary School with 5 Parent Mentors.  For the 2011 - 2012 school year, we have almost 50 Mentors working at 7 District 131 Elementary Schools.  Watch a video of some of the parents in the program here.
