Becoming Like Jesus

Week 5 | Jesus Was on Mission

January 30, 2022

Big Idea

The world needs Jesus. Therefore, the world needs people on mission who are deeply formed in the image of Christ.

Scripture

John 20:19-22, Luke 9:1-6, 10-17

Opening Thoughts

  1. What restaurant do you visit the most? Is your most visited restaurant your favorite restaurant?
  2. The world needs Jesus, and we’ve been sent into the world to be on mission as a people formed into the image of Christ. What does it mean to you to be on mission every day?

Bible Discussion

  1. Read Luke 9:1-6 & 10-17. What stands out to you?
  2. What does Jesus tell his disciples to do in these passages? What is significant about the commands he gives them?
  3. Read John 20:19-22. How would you put this in your own words? What does it mean to be sent?

Life Application

  1. When it comes to the mission of Jesus, we are all sent to help people find their way back to God. We may not feel we are ready, and in many respects, we are not, but it’s in the going that we are made ready. How have you experienced that reality in your life? How does “going” make us ready to live on mission?
  2. The picture below illustrates the relationship between finding our way back to God and helping others find their way back to God. This is a continual cycle of transformation. Why do you think both of these elements are necessary for a transformational experience of following Jesus?
  1. Read through the B.L.E.S.S. practices listed below; they are a simple but profound way to live on mission every day. How would you say you are doing living out the B.L.E.S.S. practices regularly? Which of these practices comes most natural for you? Which is the most challenging?
    • B stands for Begin with Prayer – The practice of praying for people who are far from God.\
    • L stands for Listen – Taking time to listen to others with kindness and compassion.
    • E stands for Eat – Sharing meals with people, getting to know them.
    • S stands for Serve – Finding ways to meet the needs of the people we’re trying to B.L.E.S.S.
    • S stands for Story – Looking for opportunities to share the difference Jesus has made in our own lives.
  1. What places (work, restaurants, etc.) do you visit regularly, and who do you see continually that you could B.L.E.S.S.? Think about your circles of influence? Who are five people you could B.L.E.S.S.? How could you refresh the way you B.L.E.S.S. others?
