Big Idea Series – Breakthrough
Week 2 – Breakthrough in People
Oct 27 – Nov 2, 2019
Message Big Idea
The Spirit brings breakthrough in people… in individual lives, in groups, and in whole communities.
Scripture
Icebreaker
What’s something you just realized that you think others noticed long ago?
Opening Thought
We often think that breakthroughs happen only in large, eye-popping fashion, but they are often happening around us all the time in small ways. What could some of those small breakthroughs be, and how can we work on becoming aware of them?
Bible Discussion
- Read Acts 1:1-9. What do you notice here about Jesus’ mission and our mission?
- Read Acts 10:9-23. What stood out to you that was surprising?
- Looking at both Acts passages, what changed about the mission or what changed about their understanding of the mission? What could that tell us about our mission today?
Life Application
- Breakthrough happens when we open ourselves up to the work of the Holy Spirit in and through us. What comes to mind when you think about the work of the Holy Spirit in your life or the lives of people around you?
- Who are some people around you that need a breakthrough? What could that look like?
- Is there a new area you realized this week that you would like to see a breakthrough happy?
- Breakthrough is also a COMMUNITY-wide initiative to see life-giving change happen in different areas – through Community Music, through Leadership Residents, and in our Student Community – which area is closest to your heart?
Challenge
Spend some time as a group and as individuals thinking of how you would complete this prayer: “God, I ask you for a breakthrough in _______’s life.” Commit to praying for that person daily this week. And add this prayer when you’re finished praying:
“Father, we ask you for a breakthrough – in our lives and the lives of other people. We open ourselves to the work of your Holy Spirit. Grow us. Transform us. Use us to further your mission in this world. We pray all of this in the name of Jesus and in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
