Overview

In our new Christmas series, we explore the themes of hope and anticipation found in Charles Wesley’s hymn “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus,” using it as a guide to focus our hearts on what Christmas is really all about

Opening Question

What is your favorite Christmas hymn or song, and why does it resonate with you?

Bible Discussion

  1. Read Haggai 2:6-7. How does this prophecy speak to the hope of a future glory greater than the past? How do you see this fulfilled in the coming of Jesus?
  2. Reflect on Psalm 130:5-8. What does it mean to “wait for the Lord” in the context of this passage, and how does it relate to the Advent season?
  3. In Luke 2:11-14, the angels announce the birth of Jesus. What aspects of this announcement bring hope and joy to the shepherds, and how can it bring hope to us today?
  4. Revelation 21:4-5 describes a future without pain or mourning. How does this vision of the future impact your understanding of the present world? How does the promise in Revelation 22:20 give you hope and shape the way you live today?

Life Application

  1. Considering the historical context of Charles Wesley’s hymn, how can we find hope in Scripture during times of personal or societal turmoil? Is there anything you’re currently going through where you need a reminder of God’s presence and promises?
  2. In what ways can you actively cultivate a sense of anticipation and hope during this Advent season, both personally and within your community?
  3. How can you share the message of hope found in the hymn, “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus” with someone in your life who may be struggling this Christmas season? Conclude your time together by praying for each other’s needs, asking for reminders of God’s presence and promises, and for those in your lives who need to hear the hope of this Advent season as we wait for the Lord together.
