Disciple Maker

Week 3 | What Disciples Really Need…

April 21, 2024

Big Idea

Any disciple of Jesus can become a disciple-maker. You have the ability to meet your disciple’s needs.

Scripture

2 Timothy 1:6-10, Philippians 2:19-22, and 1 Timothy 4:12-16

Overview

In our current series, we will challenge one another to move past our fears and hesitations and intentionally pursue one of the most meaningful relationships you can ever have with another person, being a disciple-maker.

Opening Questions

  • Who is your favorite movie hero or mentor? What makes them your favorite?

Bible Discussion

  1. Read 2 Timothy 1:6-10. How does Paul encourage Timothy in this passage? How do you think this made Timothy feel? How may have this impacted his future ministry?
  2. What do you think the concepts of “fan into flame the gift of God” and “a spirit of power, love, and self discipline” in verses 6-7 mean for us today as Christ-followers?
  3. Paul provided Timothy with opportunities to grow and eventually lead on his own. Read Philippians 2:19-22. How do you think Paul’s confidence in Timothy helped him grow as a disciple? What qualities of Timothy does Paul highlight in this passage that make him a valuable messenger for the Philippians?
  4. In 1 Timothy 4:12-16, Paul instructs Timothy on how to deal with false teachers who had infiltrated the church of Ephesus. What specifically does Paul tell Timothy to do? How could this apply to our lives today?

Life Application

  1. Share a time when you questioned whether you had what it takes. Perhaps it was a new job, becoming a parent, or starting college. What made you question yourself? Has your perspective changed? If so, how?
  2. Who has been a hero or mentor to you? How did that relationship impact you?
  3. Throughout this series, we are asking each of us to find our own Timothy. You have what it takes to be a disciple-maker! Has God put someone on your heart? If so, will you reach out to them this week? If you already have a Timothy, having a YOU+ conversation with them is a great next step! You can simply point them to www.youplus.info. This conversation sets the stage for relational disciple-making as it provides a great way for you to help someone take their next steps in the YOU+ Life. It can make all the difference in their lives and yours.
