Greater Than

Week 1 – Christ in You

August 2 – 8, 2020

Big Idea

Jesus, Lord of heaven and earth, makes his home in us.

Scripture

Colossians 1:15-27, John 14:16-24

Icebreaker

What city have you lived in or visited where it was very easy to get lost?

Opening Thought

Navigating a confusing and challenging city is made so much easier now with GPS. Many of us may wish we could have a GPS to get back on track in our journey as Christ-followers sometimes. The book of Colossians is that GPS in the form of a letter from Paul to the church in Colossae. Paul is concerned that some of them may have lost their way.

Bible Discussion

  1. Read Colossians 1:15-27. What stands out to you?
  2. What image of Jesus do you have in your mind after reading this?
  3. How would you explain this passage to someone who has never heard the gospel before?

Life Application

  1. Have you had a time in your faith journey that you needed to course correct? If you are comfortable, share with the group. Or, what would it look like for you to orient your life toward Jesus for the first time?
  2. Using the “greater than” analogy discussed in the message for this week – what in your life eats up more focus than it should? Is there something that is trying to be greater than Jesus?
  3. Paul said, “in him, all things hold together.” Have you had any experience in which you could see God actively at work in sustaining you? Share with the group.
  4. Describe how you have/or could begin to make Jesus the center of your life? What does that look like for you?

Challenge

A.W. Tozer once said, “As God is exalted to the right place in our lives, a thousand problems are solved all at once.” How can we put Jesus in the center of our lives? Which of your priorities may need to change so that God is greater than everything else? Let’s decide to refocus our attention now and make nothing equal or greater than Jesus. Let’s pray for one another to be drawn closer to God day by day.
