Idols

Big Idea

To prepare the way for King Jesus, we must identify the idols of our hearts.

Scripture

Matthew 3:1-3, Luke 3:3-6, and Ezekiel 14:1-11

Overview

In this new series, we are preparing as individuals and as a church for a new and greater work that God wants to do in us and through us.

Opening Question

Can you think of a time when you were completely convinced something was real, only to later find out it was fake? How did you find out, and how did it change the way you looked at it afterward?

Bible Discussion

  1. Read Matthew 3:1-3. Who was John the Baptist and what was his role in preparing the way for Jesus? Why do you think he was chosen for this role?
  2. In Matthew 3:3, Isaiah’s prophecy in Isaiah 40:3 is referenced. How does John the Baptist fulfill the prophecy? How does seeing Old Testament prophecies fulfilled in the New Testament strengthen your faith? Share any other Old Testament prophecies that have been helpful to you.
  3. Luke 3:3-6 refers to the same prophecy as Matthew 3:1-3. How is it the same as Matthew 3:1-3 and how is it different? What is the significance of the imagery used in Luke 3:5-6, such as mountains being made low and rough places being made smooth? How do these metaphors reflect spiritual transformation?
  4. Read Ezekiel 14:1-11. What are some modern-day examples of heart idols that might prevent us from fully following God? What is God’s response to heart idols in verses 3 and 4? What are the consequences for those who refuse to turn from idolatry according to verse 8?

Life Application

  1. In Sunday’s message, we used this as a definition of an idol, “An idol is anything we want more than God, anything we rely on more than God, anything we look to for greater fulfillment than God.” How can this definition relate to both the removal of the bad things in our lives as well as re-ordering the good things in our lives?
  2. In light of this definition, what things in your life might God be calling you to change? What are the obstacles that might be preventing you from responding fully to God’s call? How can we as a group support one another to make these changes?
  3. If you’re unsure what God is calling you to change, pray this prayer together, “Holy Spirit, search our hearts. Help us to see the hidden obstacles and idols within us.” Then answer these questions to yourself or with your group: What do I want more than God? What do I rely on more than God? What do I look to for fulfillment more than God? End in prayer together, asking God to help prepare your heart and mind to begin making these changes in your life to make the way for what God has next for you personally, for your small group, and for His church.
