The Way of Our Words
July 21, 2024
Big Idea
When it comes to our words, the way of wisdom builds up, the ways of foolishness tear down.
Scripture
Proverbs 12:13,18,22; Proverbs 18:21; James 3:9-10; Ephesians 4:29; Proverbs 23:15-16; and Matthew 12:34b
Overview
Our current four-week series will explore the way of wisdom through the book of Proverbs, which is most typically associated with wisdom in the Bible.
Opening Questions
When was the last time you received a really great compliment? What was it, and how did it affect your outlook on the rest of your day?
Take time to compliment someone in your small group, whether about what they’re wearing or something you appreciate about them. Words are powerful, no matter how simple they seem!
Bible Discussion
1. Read Proverbs 12:13,18 and 22. What do they have in common? What do these verses say about the power of our words?
2. Proverbs 18:21 tells us what’s at stake with our words. How can our words have the power to bring life or death in various contexts, such as relationships, personal growth, and conflict? How does this verse connect with other biblical teachings about speech, such as those found in James 3:9-10 and Ephesians 4:29?
3. Read Proverbs 23:15-16. What legacy do we leave behind when we prioritize wisdom and right speech? How can we intentionally influence the next generation to value and pursue these virtues? As God is our heavenly Father, how does it make you feel that He rejoices when we “speak what is right”?
4. Matthew 12:34b speaks to the heart of the matter. How do our words reflect the condition of our hearts? What role do worship, prayer, scripture, and community play in improving the condition of our hearts?
Life Application
5. How were words and speech handled in your home growing up? How has that impacted you today?
6. If you reflect on how you use your words, what kind of results do they produce?
7. Are you willing to take the 7-day challenge presented on Sunday to hold critical words? Or maybe you want to affirm someone in your life once a day for 7 days? If you try it, please share your experience at the beginning of group next week.
