The Way of Our Work
August 4, 2024
Big Idea
When it comes to work, the way of wisdom leads to purpose, while the ways of foolishness lead to emptiness.
Scripture
Genesis 2:15, Proverbs 12:11, Proverbs 10:4, and Colossians 3:23-24
Overview
Our current four-week series will explore the way of wisdom through the book of Proverbs, which is most typically associated with wisdom in the Bible.
Opening Question
What was your first job? What advice would you give someone starting their first job today based on your experience?
Bible Discussion
1. Read Genesis 2:15. What does this verse tell us about the purpose of work in God’s creation? What does this verse suggest about God’s original intention for humanity before the fall?
2. Proverbs 12:11 contrasts two types of workers. What are they, and how do they differ? How do you interpret the phrase “chase fantasies”? What might this look like in a modern context? What are some potential consequences of chasing fantasies instead of focusing on productive work?
3. Read Proverbs 10:4. What type of worker is highlighted here? What does this suggest about the relationship between work ethic and financial outcomes? How can one balance diligence without becoming a workaholic? What role does rest play in maintaining diligence?
4. Echoing the wisdom of Proverbs, the apostle Paul challenges us in Colossians 3:23-24. How can this passage encourage us to maintain integrity and excellence in our work, even when it goes unnoticed by others? How can working with this attitude be a witness to others about our faith?
Life Application
5. How do you view your work? What circumstances or life situations have contributed to your perspective on work?
6. In what areas of your life do you need to focus more on “working your land” and less on “chasing fantasies”?
7. What motivates you to be diligent in your work? How can you stay motivated when tasks become difficult or monotonous?
8. How do you handle constructive criticism or lack of recognition at work, knowing that your ultimate reward comes from God? Ask for God’s perspective to help you in this.
