Big Idea Series – Defy Gravity

Week 1 – The Pull of Culture

Jan 26 – Feb 1, 2020

Message Big Idea

Jesus reveals the way to defy the gravitational pull of our culture and live a life of generosity.

Scripture

Matthew 6:19-34

Icebreaker & Opening Thought

  1. What was a recent gift you were excited to give?
  2. Jesus invites us to shift our thinking from a Me-first mindset to a Kingdom first mindset. In general, what message do you hear about money in our contemporary society?

Bible Discussion

  1. Read Matthew 6:19-34. What do you notice about the passage?
  2. What challenges you most about what Jesus says in these verses?

Life Application

  1. Money has a profound impact on our daily lives. A recent survey by Capital One found that 73% of Americans say their finances are the number-one cause of stress in life. In what ways have you experienced stress around money?
  2. Our culture is the most marketed to societies in the history of the world, and the cumulative message is Hurry, Worry, and Consume. Instead, a Kingdom message is Give, Save, and Live. How would living your life around Kingdom values impact your everyday life?
  3. Which of the Kingdom living strategies would you like to see more of in your life right now (Give, Save, and Live).

Challenge

In our culture, so much of our treasure involves what we own and what we have. And while we think we have it, too often it truly has us. When we put Jesus at the center of our life, seeking his kingdom first – giving over to him what is already his, we begin to defy gravity and experience freedom from hurry, worry, and consume.
