Genetically Generous

Week 4 | Excelling in the Grace of Giving

July 16, 2023

Big Idea

We’re all wired for generosity, but we express it in various ways.

Scripture

2 Corinthians 8:1-15

Opening Questions

  1. Have you ever taken one of those silly online tests? If so, which one is your favorite? What do you think motivates us to take those?

Opening Thought

We are wired for generosity because we’re made in the image of a generous God. Yet, we’ve learned that this wiring shows up in different ways. We have different motivations for being generous.

Bible Discussion

  1. Read 2 Corinthians 8:1-15. What stood out to you?
  2. What adjectives could you use to describe the Macedonians? The Corinthians?
  3. Reread verse 9. What did Jesus’ generosity look like? How does that motivate you?

Life Application

  1. If you haven’t taken the generosity survey at mygenprofile.com, please do so now. Once you’ve completed the assessment, click on your profile description and share it with your group. Make sure to read all the sections of your profile, including the shadow side, the growth challenge and the challenge verse. What do you think of it? In what ways does it feel accurate or inaccurate?
  2. Each profile comes not just with strengths, but also shadows, blindspots that we might not even be aware of. These could be unexamined motivations or a chance to stretch and grow that we have yet to realize. Reread your profile. In what ways do you see yourself in the shadow side description?
  3. What are some ways you could partner with someone in your group who has a strength that compliments your growth areas (and vice versa) so that you could help each other stretch and “excel in the grace of giving” (verse 7)?

Challenge

Spend time dreaming about how you’d like to become generous in the coming year. How could you stretch yourself concerning finances, relationships and serving? Make a plan to give back and end your group praying for one another’s goals.
