Big Idea Series – Hero Maker

Week 4 – Blessing Like a Hero Maker

Mar 8 – Mar 14, 2020

Message Big Idea

Blessing like a Hero Maker requires a shift from holding on to God’s blessing to giving God’s blessing.

Scripture

Matthew 28:19-20, Luke 24:50-51, John 7:38, Ezekiel 47:1-12, 1 Peter 2:4-5

Ice Breaker

What is the worst “do it yourself” disaster you have ever been involved in?

Opening Thought

During the time of Christ, individuals didn’t always have the freedom to choose their profession, much was decided for them by their family. Boys apprenticed under their father for their trade. Kings and royals were determined by birth, as were priests. The disciples were not royalty but Jesus commissioned them to help spread the word of God. He chose ordinary people that were made extraordinary through Christ that allowed them to be Hero Makers.

Bible Discussion

  1. Read John 7:38. Why did you think Jesus used the analogy of a river to describe the power that a person that believes in him would have?
  2. Read 1 Peter 2:4-5. What is the analogy in this passage?
  3. Read Luke 24:50-51. Jesus blessed his disciples to bless others. Bible scholar Walter Brueggemann describes blessing as the “…the capacity to transmit energy and power for life from one to another.” What do you think of that definition of the word bless?

Life Application

  1. Just as Jesus commissioned the disciples to be Hero Makers, he commissions us as well. What does it mean to you to be commissioned?
  2. What are the tools that we have access to that may help us in our commission?
  3. In what area of your life do you feel commissioned to be a river of living water? Who might God be prompting you to bless and be a Hero Maker to in your circle of influence?

Challenge

Henry Blackaby once said “The reality is that the Lord never calls the qualified; He qualifies the called.” Let’s move forward this week in accepting the call and our commission to be a Hero Maker in our circle of influence. Pray for opportunities where you can commission others to be a blessing as well and help more and more people find their way back to God.
