I AM

Week 2 | I AM the Good Shepherd

July 30, 2023

Big Idea

Jesus is the answer to our need for intimacy with God. He is the Good Shepherd and the gate.

Scripture

John 10:1-6, John 10:7-18 and Psalm 23

Overview

In our current series, we look at the “I AM” statements in the Gospel of John, the fourth book in the New Testament written by one of Jesus’ closest friends and followers. These statements are important because they are the recorded words of Jesus Himself telling us something about His identity.

Opening Questions

What animal are you most like and why?

Bible Discussion

  1. Read John 10:1-6. What are some characteristics of a good shepherd? Can you think of some particularly good shepherds from the Old Testament? Who is our ultimate Good Shepherd?
  2. In this following passage, Jesus changes metaphors from shepherds to gates. Read John 10:7-18. In Jesus’ day, most sheep pens didn’t have a door to secure the sheep. Instead, the shepherd himself would lie down at the entrance. What do you think this signifies? What else stands out to you in these verses?
  3. Read Psalm 23. How does this passage relate to John 10:11? What does this say about the identity of Jesus?

Life Application

  1. In John 10:1-6, Jesus states that His sheep follow Him because they know His voice. How is this true for you? Is there something currently competing for your attention? If so, how can you reduce the noise in your life so you can get quiet enough to hear your Shepherd Jesus’ voice?
  2. Jesus states in John 10:9 that He is “the gate” and whoever enters through Him will be saved. Jesus literally laid down His life for us. He invites everyone to “come in” for His protection and to “come out” to experience the abundant life that can only be found through Him. Have you accepted Jesus’ invitation? If not, what is holding you back? If you have, how have you experienced the guidance and care of Jesus as your Good Shepherd?
  3. If you have said yes to Jesus’ invitation, how are you experiencing life to the full, as referenced by Jesus in John 10:10? A great place to explore this concept of life to the full is having a YOU+ conversation here at COMMUNITY. We desire to come alongside you and help you figure out what next steps Jesus is calling you to take in your relationship with the Good Shepherd so that you can enter more fully into the love and the YOU+ life that Jesus offers.
