Overview

In our current series, we look at the “I AM” statements in the Gospel of John, the fourth book in the New Testament written by one of Jesus’ closest friends and followers. Through these statements, Jesus is telling us about Himself and the kind of life He came to bring.

Bible Discussion

  1. Read John 11:1-16. What stands out most to you in this passage? How does Jesus’ approach to Lazarus’ death reflect His overall mission and purpose?
  2. Read John 11:17-27, focusing on verses 25 and 26. Can you draw any parallels between Lazarus’ resurrection and Jesus’ resurrection?
  3. The raising of Lazarus is a powerful and pivotal miracle performed by Jesus. Read John 11:28-44. In what ways does this event mirror the calling of believers out of spiritual darkness into the light of Christ? Imagine if you were an eyewitness to this miracle. How do you think you would have reacted?

Life Application

  1. Writer James Baldwin once said, “The Lord never seems to get there when you want him, but when he arrives, he’s always right on time.” Have you found this to be true in your life? If so, how?
  2. Jesus states in John 11:25-26 that He is the resurrection and the life and asks Martha, “Do you believe this?” Jesus is meeting Martha in her head to help reach her heart. Can you relate to Martha and her doubt of God coming through for her in her present situation? If so, how?
  3. What hard things are you walking through right now that need the resurrection power of Jesus? Let’s take some extended time in prayer together to call on His resurrection power to breathe fresh life and hope into those hard places. “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
